The Danakil Depression / Erta Ale – 6 Days
Day 1: Addis Ababa – Mekele – Berhaile
Today we fly to Mekele where we will meet our drivers and head to Berhaile. Here we will make camp and settle in to see camel caravans passing through against the backdrop of a dramatic sunset.
Day 2: Berhaile – Ahmedela
This morning we depart for our drive to Ahmedela, passing through settlements of the nomadic Afar people.
Day 3: Ahmedela – Erta Alle
We begin today by driving from Ahmedela to Dodom where we start our 15 kilometer trek to the Erta Alle volcano lake which stands at 613 meters above sea level. We will be arriving at Erta Alle around midnight and walk to see the spectacular volcanic eruption. Camp will be set up near, but upwind from the eruption.
Day 4: Erta Alle – Berhaile
Today we leave Erta Ale and head to Lake Asale where we will stop to watch the local workers as they cut bricks of salt from the lake bed. The bricks are then sold at the market and loaded on camel caravans for transport to the highlands. We continue on to Dalol and view the dramatic and colourful geological formations caused by the hot springs rich in sulphur, potash, and salt. We return to Berhaile to make camp.
Day 5: Berhaile – Mekele
This morning we drive to Mekele stopping en route visit an Afar village perched on the escarpment of the Great Rift Valley.
Day 6: Mekele – Addis Ababa
We fly back to Addis Ababa today and have the chance to visit the National Museum, home of the 3.18 million year old skeleton “Lucy” and get in some last minute souvenir shopping in the afternoon. We will have a farewell dinner at a traditional Ethiopian restaurant featuring dancers and musicians representing some of the country’s many ethnic groups.
